Transcripts and Credit Transfer

All grades received for academic work completed at Smolny College will be issued on a Bard College transcript (Smolny College can only issue an unofficial transcript to North American students according to Russian law). Students wishing to transfer credits to their home institution should fill out a Transcript Request Form prior to arrival at Smolny College (these forms are provided to participants in the acceptance packet). Contact the Bard College Registrar if you need additional transcripts in the future.

Transferring credits to your home institution is fairly simple, but there is general protocol to be followed. Students should stay in contact with their advisors at their home institutions during course selection to ensure that the chosen courses will be accepted for transfer. Generally, courses already taken at your home institution will not transfer (even if you take the course in Russian at Smolny College). Often there is a minimum (low) grade below which credits will not transfer. At many schools this is a C or C-. Students may also be asked to present course descriptions, syllabi, and graded academic work to their home institutions for credit transfer. We therefore suggest that all students retain copies of syllabi and written assignments until the transfer of credit is complete. In addition, in order to help facilitate the transfer of credits, we request that you submit a copy of all your written assignments and creative works (pictures, film, etc.) to the Associate Dean for International Students, to be kept in your file in the event that questions on a particular course should arise at your home institution.

The fact that Bard College issues transcripts for your study at Smolny will be extremely helpful in assuring that you receive full credit for your work. Bard-Smolny staff will also support you in resolving any questions that may arise as a result of the study-abroad policies of your home institution, department, or faculty members. As in all academic matters, good planning and communication will help to ensure that things go smoothly.
