Bard-Smolny Study Abroad Program

Tuition and Scholarships

Program Cost
Bard and Smolny Colleges are committed to making study at Smolny affordable for you. We are happy to work with you on ways to do this, taking your specific financial situation into account.

In many cases, a semester at Smolny will cost no more than a semester at your home institution. Bard staff work closely with study abroad staff at your home institution to ensure that whenever possible financial aid packages, including Federal and State scholarships, will transfer. In situations where institutional aid does not transfer, you will be considered for a Bard-Smolny scholarship.

North American students at Smolny College pay Bard College tuition, which covers all course work, including the two-week Russian Language Intensive prior to each semester and the transfer of credit. Pre-departure training and orientation costs, the cultural program in St. Petersburg, and several overnight trips outside of St. Petersburg are included. Room and board in Russia are considerably less expensive than in North America or Western Europe. Below are estimated program expenses for one semester:

*Room fees for both host family and dormitory will be payable directly to Bard College. Students opting to stay with host families will have most meals provided (breakfast and dinner). Students opting to stay in dorms will have a kitchenette available and must cover all meals, as no board is provided with dorm accommodations. Please see the Housing Information Sheet for more information about the host family and dormitory options.

**Personal expenses will vary by student based on personal expenditures. Students’ main expenses usually include: international telephone calls, cost of cellular phone calls (cell phone is provided), internet use, toiletries and entertainment (eating/going out, concerts, movies, etc.).  Personal expenses are based on living in St. Petersburg and vary depending on how much personal travel a student wishes to undertake outside of the Bard-Smolny cultural program. The cultural program is included in the program tuition and involves on average three events a month, including: area museums and attractions; opera, ballet, and theater visits; two excursions outside of the city (past excursions have included Pskov, Novgorod, and Vyborg); and a trip to Moscow.  Some social activities including a student get-together (often bowling) and several dinners are also included.

Bard-Smolny Program Scholarships
If your institutional aid does not transfer to study abroad, we encourage you to explore funding and scholarship options with Bard's experienced staff. Smolny applicants may be eligible for generous fellowships from the Bard-Smolny Program, based on academic achievement and financial need. To apply, you should submit a statement of need, a copy of your FAFSA form for the current academic year, and a copy of your home institutions most recent award letter with your program application.
