Student Life
Student life is an important and growing part of Smolny as a liberal arts institution. Smolny does not have a residential campus, and there are fewer established student organizations than on most American campuses. Nonetheless, students are encouraged to think big and create clubs and organizations to fit their interests and needs. Among the student clubs and initiatives at Smolny in recent years are: intramural soccer; KVN (a sketch comedy team that represents Smolny in competitions against other institutions); a Safe Sex Club; a discussion group on globalization; a gay and lesbian alliance (started by an American); a human rights awareness group; an intellectual film club that holds regular screenings in the University’s screening room; and “SmArt”, a student art and literary journal founded by Russian and American students. This semester North-American students are organizing a film club as well as a hip hop club, and students are participating in the college soccer team.
Smolny also has a student-run Social Committee, which organizes student get-togethers and parties throughout the semester. Past events have included a fall party, a New Year's Eve party, Cosmonaut day, and end of semester events.
Smolny College has its own newspaper, Abzats, to which students are encouraged to contribute. Students are always invited to participate in the numerous lectures, seminars, and conferences that take place at Smolny College.
