HistoryThe Virtual Campus Project grew out of discussions among faculty and staff from Smolny and Bard College. Particularly important was the involvement of St. Petersburg State University's Interdisciplinary Center for Advanced Professional Education (ICAPE), which cooperates closely with Smolny, and of Academic Computing staff at Bard College.

FundingThe Project is funded by a generous grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The Future The Project is experimental; to our knowledge, no one has used distance technology for joint course development and teaching involving partners abroad.

In addition to the Bard College-Smolny cooperation, we envision that the Virtual Campus will soon accommodate collaborative learning projects that bring Bard College faculty and students together with their peers at

• Bard College High School Early College, in New York City
• Simon's Rock College of Bard College in Great Barrington, Massachusetts
• The Bard College Global and International Affairs program, in New York City
• The Bard College Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, in New York City
• Rockefeller University, in New York City, and
• Partner universities in Germany and South Africa, among others.
